NO / NEW TOUCH : JADE Project (IISCI, MUN-MEARL, MUSIC NL, 2021)

Translating EEG signals into musical sound: a collaboration w/ Andrew Staniland. https://www.andrewstaniland.com/jade

The screen shows: me wearing EEG headset (bottom left)-> transmitting via OSC-> into MAX (right side of screen)-> into Ableton (top left)->output/speaker.

Although electronics allows music making to increasingly seem possible without touch, the human experience of sound continues to rely on touch in multiple significant ways.

Sound still reaches and touches our bodies and ears. And sound production is still manipulated with technologies and interfaces whose design and programming still depend entirely on touch, however mediated via new objects we created… the trace of the human body in our technologies may seem more distant because of intermediary tools we use, but those tools still carry the trace of their creator’s bodies, and are also often made for human bodies.
